Glacier Power, a curriculum supplemental module, lays a solid foundation in the exciting subject of glaciers and may be incorporated into Earth system science studies from grades 4 through 6.
Experience Technology: Glacier Power comes in two ways:
It is an interactive World Wide Web module using the current technology. The URL is:
http://www.asf.alaska.edu/project/sdc/program/glacier_power
Glacier Power is also available on a CD-ROM which includes Netscape 3.04 and Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01 installers for Macintosh. Older or newer versions of Netscape may not work correctly.
Installation: Double click on the Netscape Installer Icon to load Netscape on your computer. You may need to restart your machine after doing this. You will also need Quicktime 2.5 or later to see many of the pictures and animations. You may need to install Quicktime from your Mac OS system disks or the latest version can be obtained from http://www.quicktime.apple.com/
Note: For Glacier Power! to run correctly, the CD-Rom must be in your CD-Rom drive or the entire contents copied to your hard drive. The directory structure of Glacier Power! and the file names MUST be maintained!
Video problems: Virtual Memory is known to cause problems when Quicktime movies are played. Virtual memory should be turned off in the memory control panel before using Glacier Power!. The amount of ram allocated to Netscape 3.04 should be increased to 15 MB, so click on the Netscape Navigator icon and selecting Get Info from the File menu. Then set the Preferred size to 15000.
Running Glacier Power!: Double click on the file labeled: Glacier Power!.
Slide Shows: Double click on AK Glaciers Slide Show
Teachers Guide: Adobe Acrobat Reader files may be viewed or printed out and placed in a three-ring binder. Files contain the contents of Glacier Power!, lesson plans and answer keys. All Adobe Acrobat files are located in the PDF_Files directory on the CD-Rom. The files are broken down into the Glacier Power! segments. A single Adobe Acrobat Teachers Guide file (all segments with active links and index) can be downloaded after 3 Jan 1998 from: http://www.asf.alaska.edu:2222/
Ice worms and a woolly mammoth appear throughout the module as characters who, when clicked on, introduce verbal definitions of glacier terminology or give interesting facts about glaciers.
