The International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) held their 10th annual meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, from 12-14 October 2009.  This year's meeting was sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization.
The Alaska Satellite Facility participated in the event as a data provider for the National/Naval Ice Center (NIC).  The need for a wide variety of satellite sensors, including multiple frequencies of SAR sensors to provide information on the location and quantity of ice in the Arctic, was a theme of multiple talks at the meeting.  The link below leads you to the IICWG Web site and the press release issued by the group which advises of continuing navigation hazards in the Arctic. http://nsidc.org/noaa/iicwg/
